The UK offshoot of Pangea follows up its excellent Alex Stealthy EP with its fourth release courtesy of Russian producer Siberian Son. Having previous released on Switzerland’s Sog imprint Siberian Son comes up with three deep progressive numbers to serve up on Pangea.
The title track of the EP ‘Playing’ takes centre stage on the a-side. The techy percussion of the intro soon gives way to deep bass, spaced out melodies and a haunting vocal. The track strips back during the breakdown before the bassline bites back and rolls the track to its conclusion.
‘Venus’ continues the deep atmospherics. This progressive breaks gem is probably the strongest of the tracks on offer here; a fusion of the sounds you would expect from Derek Howell and Infusion. Carefully worked percussion and a squeaky synth combine with a seemingly bottomless bassline to create a smooth spacey track. The high pitch keys seem a little out of place on this dark workout, but that aside this is a thoroughly well-thought out piece.
Two very understated yet powerful tracks here. Pangea deserve a lot of credit for pushing the envelope and offering up something a little different and quirkier than most progressive labels manage. Hopefully their decision will pay off.
